Is there more than one level of depression? Can it be genetic? Aside from medication and counseling, what are some other ways to get through it?

Is it even a real disease, and if so why do people have a hard time coping with it on their own
The only reason i ask this is because , atleast the way i see it, people get depressed because of external factors therefore it is not that someone needs to cure a disease they have as much as it is those factors that lead to the depression need to be changed, and unless they are the "depression" can't be fixed. I thought it was just a natural reaction to a bad situation, like a reflex

People misunderstand the true meaning and i want to know what is your definition of depression. Why in some cases people have a severe deal of depression that one day they are happy but then all of a sudden they become really sad but don't know why. Then they are mope around but then later they are happy.
